The Daevl.Plugs Audio Transmogrification Suite

The Daevl.Plugs were built to bring organic qualities to electronic music and digital audio. Many employ random or chaotic processes triggered by peaks in the source material. Standardized controls, one-touch randomization, title links to help docs in each of 9 major and 9 CPU light plug-ins make it easy to put the Daevl into your own productions, up front in a mix or layered beneath for change and interest.

Each has its own strengths depending on source material, but every Daevl.Plug will transmogrify anything: voice, bass, guitar, synthesizers, drums, choirs of heavenly angels... you name it.

daevl.cerberus (mini version - daevl.cerberus.bite)

Three delays in a feedback network, with distortion via self frequency modulation plus time-shifting on each channel.

Daevl.cerberus flows out clouds of delay, syncopated rhythms, percussive trills. Beat-glopping, clustering and phasing effects turn source rhythms into completely new beats. Pads become swirling environments, reconstructive miracles are found on minimal basslines and kick/snare loops.

daevl.cubedriver

Daevl.cubedriver places a bitcrusher and pitchshifter inside a stereo delay loop. When feedback is engaged on the delay lines, audio is repitched and re-crushed on each new trip through the loop. An envelope follower brings the output back into shape through re-application of the source audio's envelope.

The result can be something like Mario Land, or something like a glitched Speak 'n' Spell, but more fluid than either.

daevl.hilbertspace (mini version - daevl.hilbertspace.1d)

Three Hilbert-Transform ring modulators in a dual mono delay network.

Daevl.hilbertspace can create a shifting, metallic halo or turn the softest of sounds into rusted machinery. Beautiful blips and techno dreams are to be found here, switching and twitching to modulation hell with a simple flick of the mouse.

daevl.noise (mini versions - daevl.noise.pitched and daevl.noise.white)

Daevl.noise replaces source audio with enveloped pitched and white noise. The three channels of pitched noise and single channel of filtered white noise all include random instability. A variable strength envelope follower linked to the source audio brings the noise back into line.

Loops, basslines and other percussive elements can be instantly turned into synthetic rhythms, and single drum replacement is a daevl.noise specialty: rip out that phat kik and replace it with honest Kraftwerkian goodness.

daevl.sixcylinder (mini version - daevl.sixcylinder.twoshot)

Three dual-mono amplitude oscillators in a cat's cradle delay network, daevl.sixcylinder creates shifting, pulsating terrains, from ultra slow oscillation rhythms to synthetic audio rate tones. Source audio is amplitude modulated by three pairs of independent oscillators, each available as sine, triangle or sample and hold. A single value controls crosstalk among all oscillators in the network simultaneously.

daevl.threep (mini version - daevl.threep.eep)

Daevl.threep sets three networked pitch shifters in motion, with random pitch sweeps every n seconds, specified by portamento time. Each pitch shifter feeds into the next, with the third feeding into a delay before routing back to pitch shifter one.

Tangled lines of slowly changing pitch structures are easliy accomplished on melodic material like basslines, strings, vocals. Arpeggiated synth lines are daevl.threep's favorite playmates.

daevl.triad (mini version - daevl.triad.tattoo)

Three pitch class filters with selectable Q, cross-channel frequency modulation, overdriven distortion on each channel, followed on the composite out by a smoothly randomizing 5 band EQ peak synchronized to the source signal.

Everything from ultimate fuzz chaos to snapshot-like extreme random EQ effects is available in daevl.triad. If you want to rain the destruction down, daevl.triad will do it.

daevl.triphase (mini version - daevl.triphase.isolate)

Three phase delays in selectable serial/parallel/hybrid configuration, daevl.triphase creates anything from classic phase bounce sounds of the 70s to undulating lines of snakey audio expansion and contraction.

In true Daevl.Plug fashion, rates can be pushed up into the audio domain, opening up a range of modulation closer to synthesis than effect.

daevl.triptych (mini version - daevl.triptych.monad)

Three graphic multiband filters in parallel, with time-shifting and feedback on each channel, plus added controls for creating perfectly spaced comb filters and randomized frequency sieves of your chosen sonic density. Daevl.triptych is truly beautiful on vocals and string sections.

Any source audio can be made to throb and pulse as ambient pads and washes. Chunkier ranges of frequencies expose unexpected rhythms, while sparse, isolated bands create faerie song from thin air.

Technical specs

The Daevl.Plugs were created with Max/MSP/Jitter from Cycling '74, a graphical programming environment for the manipulation of MIDI, digital audio, images and video. Pluggo, also from Cycling '74, puts the power of Max/MSP/Jitter inside your audio applications as VST2, AU and RTAS plug-ins. VST2 is generally the most stable and full-featured of the various architectures. If your host supports multiple plug-in types, such as Ableton Live, use VST2.

The Daevl.Plugs are currently available for Windows XP and in Universal Binary format for Macintosh OS X on both PPC and Intel based machines.
